The past few years has seen a huge increase in the quantity of individuals experiencing dry skin and eczema. But it is not necessarily clear if there is a relationship.

It is therefore significant to establish whether dry skin could be an indication of this condition. This is because identifying symptoms such as dry skin to a condition like eczema would aid in proper (and hopefully enduring) treatment of the condition rather than just the symptom. But as it turns out, the relationship between the two is a tricky one to understand – particularly as one of the key symptoms of eczema is dry skin. Yet, not everyone necessarily has eczema.

The first key to making sense of the this lies in defining the other major symptoms of eczema – which is defined as a type of inflammation of the skin. If you happen to have a few of these other symptoms then the skin dryness you feel could indeed be a sign. Other problems include skin swelling, cracking and crusting, which could worsen into blistering, oozing and even bleeding. So if someone is suffering with perpetual dry skin – as well as these other symptoms – then it may well be a sign that you are suffering from eczema. Conversely, if one is not suffering these other symptoms, then the dry skin could be as a result of something else.

Making sense of the relationship between dry skin and eczema must lie in understanding other possible reasons. These include hormonal problems, anemia and diabetes mellitus. Bathing with excessively hot water could also lead to skin dryness. It could also be a result of genetic reasons, a typical example of this being a syndrome called Ichthyoses Vulgaris. Use of certain prescriptions has also been linked to dry skin. Therefore, when assessing whether dry skin is a result of eczema, it could very well turn out that the dryness experienced is on account of another condition (or medicines they are taking), and has utterly nothing to do with eczema.
