Rose hip oil has shown to be beneficial to those who suffer from skin problems due to sun exposure for example, photoaging (dermatoheliosis). People who live in warm climates are most frequently affected by these ailments. UV exposure can create several changes in skin that can sometimes be severe. Dermatoheliosis’ severity ranges from small wrinkles to active keratosis as well as can cause on alteration in melanin granule distribution.
The healing effects of rose hip seed oil were tested among a sample of people who either spend three months of summer at seaside resorts or who go to the beach every day. In the year 1988, a group of twenty women between the ages of 25 and 35 were tested, controlled and assessed. The most frequently observed cutaneous signs were surface wrinkles, brown spots, and in some cases, a noticeable tan. The group of women used rose hip oil on their faces during four months of Autumn in 1988 (May to August).
Every eight days, reports were given on the effects the treatments were having on the skin. Important changes were observed from the third week on. Results show that spots began to fade, wrinkles started to reduce in appearance, and by the end of the fourth month, almost all sun induced blemishes had gone away. Skin was left smooth, fresh, and with even complexion.
Treatment of Surgical Scars
This study was done with scars of similar types. Ten women were tested, who were between the ages 45 and 68 and had undergone either unilateral or bilateral mastectomy.
The same day the surgical stitches were removed, application of rose hip seed started. The oil was softly massaged into the skin after a gentle wash with tepid water and soap. Oil was applied twice daily for three months to result in the following reduction in scar visibility, smooth appearance and improvement in color and skin elasticity.
After four months of rose hip oil treatment, specialists noted a significant improvement in patients’ skin conditions. This allowed for the conditions for implantation of prosthesis or plastic surgery to be far better than in patients who had not received this treatment.
These sample studies as well as indigenous accounts of rose hip oil treatments have uncovered its benefits as a natural skin treatment. Not only has it been used for surgery scars, but also for stretch marks, acne scars, and other skin blemishes.
