Acne treatment options have been improving somewhat over the years. Online tips offering acne help and advice on skin treatments have greatly increased the amount of information out there, but for those suffering from severe or persistent acne, it’s still important to get the advice of a professional dermatologist.

Acne is has proven to be caused by bacteria, and exacerbated by environmental factors like hygiene, diet and exercise. However, it is also accepted as a genetic component, especially in severe and persistent conditions like psoriasis. Cleaning the face regularly especially where the glands are most active is a practical solution to acne. However if this approach is not effective, it could be that the cause is a combination of both genetics and the environment.

The millions of young people seeking acne help must sort through a growing set of choices to find the best treatment for them. Teens, along with some adults who can suffer outbreaks into their 20s and 30s, undergo a nightly ritual of experimentation with different soaps and creams.

There are many options for the treatment of acne. Over the counter topical creams and lotions are readily available and for the harder cases more potent treatments can be obtained with a prescription. The active ingredient in over the counter topical creams is primarily Salicylic acid. This acid is also known as aspirin. The results for those who use soaps and creams often vary. The compounds that are available by prescription only serve as antiseptics that fight against bacteria.

The most potent available treatment may be high-dosage Vitamin A, which is taken orally for several weeks. As a side effect it may produce severe facial dryness and chapped lips, since it affects the oil glands. It is available only through prescription due to the risk of severe birth defects for pregnant women. Those undergoing the treatment also need regular blood screenings to monitor the liver.

Despite the best that medical science can offer, acne help is still sought after by millions who want a quick and painless solution. Dermatologists usually advise against popping pimples because squeezing can damage tissue and actually push the pustule deeper below the surface. If it is excised improperly, permanent scarring can occur. But regardless of the risk, the unsightly whitehead has been lamented and squeezed and popped again and again until the problem finally goes away on its own.
